Carson Crosses Canada
Written by: Linda Bailey Illustrated by: Kass Reich I used this book to ease my students back into social studies content after after a long Christmas break. In this book, Annie and her dog Carson venture across to Canada to visit her sister, who has fallen ill. We we were able to situate ourselves in the context of the book and using prior knowledge guess what part of Canada each page of the book had landed us in. We focused in on curriculum by paying attention to the three communities we are studying - Iqaluit, Météghan and Saskatoon. |
Fiddles & Spoons: Journey of an Acadian Mouse
Written by: Lila Hope-Simpson Illustrated by: Doretta Groenendyk In Social Studies, we continued our conversation about culture in Météghan and among the Acadian people. This book took us through the journey of the Acadians and their strong music tradition. We then gave playing the wooden spoons a shot ourselves. As it turns out, a few of us still need a little bit of practice. |
When I Grow Up
Written by: Al Yankovic Given the current state of affairs with the COVID-19 pandemic at large we were unfortunately unable to get to this book. This quirky story talks about all the inventive and crazy things this kid wants to be when he grows up. It served as the perfect introduction to our final performance task in our unit talking about work in which we chose a job that we wanted to when we go up and researched and presented them. |
When I Grow Up
Written by: Mercer Mayer Given the current state of affairs with the COVID-19 pandemic at large we were unfortunately unable to get to this book. This little story was also meant to supplement my student's final performance task and have them think a little bit more about what they might want to do when they grow up. |
The Polar Bear Son: An Inuit Tale
Retold and Illustrated by: Lydia Dabcovich In Social Studies, we have been talking about cultural differences between our three communities that we have been studying. We discussed that stories are a very important part of culture and listened to this traditional Inuit tale read to us by Lisa Schafer. |
Évagéline and Gabriel
French Folk Tale In Social Studies, we have been learning about the importance of a culture's traditional stories and how they can contribute to community. We have recently been looking at how music can sometimes also convey meaning and some of a culture's folk tales. We did this by taking a look at heartbreaking French folk tale of Acadians - Évangéline and Gabriel based on the poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. |
